The citadel of Civita di Bagnoregio is located on top of a large hill, offering an incomparable spectacle to the observer from the vantage points of Bagnoregio. The writer Bonaventura Tecchi called it the “dying city”, and this is partly true.
Civita di Bagnoregio is in fact on a very precarious terrain located on a tuffaceous ground, for this reason it is in danger of collapse because the vast clay banks that support it are subjected to continuous erosion. The wonderful village of Civita di Bagnoregio is a very small town where time seems to stand still and that you can only reach on foot, along a concrete bridge built for the benefit of the few remaining citizens and tourists who come to visit from all over the world.
Civita is located on the volcanic soil and looks almost like an island of red tufa stone in the sea of white clay badlands. The view really is a lunar landscape.
From East Cliff of Civita di Bagnoregio you can admire the magnificent spectacle of “Jumpers”, enormous natural walls in clay, last vestige of an erosion process started thousands of years ago and not yet finished.
After Civita di Bagnoregio we will move to Orvieto. Orvieto is famous for its “Duomo”, one of the most beautiful gothic architecture of Italy, the celebration of all the arts, from painting effects Mosaic, the chiaroscuro of the bas-reliefs, frescoes by Signorelli and Beato Angelico. But it is also an ancient Etruscan capital city and the city where the Middle Ages left a harmonious impression. There are many ancient churches and among its lanes: Orvieto is famous for the warm color of the tuff and the landscape of the badlands, the Papal city of the fortress and St. Patrick’s well. St. Patrick’s Well is an italian expression used to refer to a mysterious and rich reserve. According to others with the expression “is like St. Patrick’s Well”, it means something to throw resources and energy, but in vain, because it is never full.
